Direct Action: Book: 2017: Crimethinc Workers Collective: No Wall They Can Build: A Guide to Borders &
Migration Across North America, Crimethinc
  • Excellent critique of border politics written from the perspective of someone who assists migrants through the desert
  • Written from an anarchist perspective that states an opposition to national borders

Grunge: Book: 2017: Patty Schemel: Hit So Hard: A Memoir, Da Capo Press
  • Book memoir that shares a name with a 2010 documentary film about Schemel (and with  a Hole song title)
  • No surprises, only more detail, for anyone who had first seen the documentary

Pussy Riot: Books: 2017: Maria Alyokhina: Riot Days, Metropolitan Books

Radical Left: Books: 2014: Bini Adamczak: Communism for Kids, MIT Press
  • I got this because the provocative title was generating one-star Amazon reviews by outraged squares

  • Essentially an overview of Marxist thought with some easy-to-read scenarios describing revolutionary outcomes

Organized Labor: Book: 2017: Terry Tapp: A Serf’s Journal: The Story of the United States’ Longest Wildcat Strike, Zero Books
  • In 2017 Zero Books became my favorite book publisher and A Serf’s Journal is one of the reasons why.

  • A great memoir of a wildcat strike I didn’t realize happened, and the loss of memory of this event is addressed by the author at the end.

  • Close to the end of reading this I realized that I’ve heard Terry Tapp twice as a guest on the Zero Books podcast and he’s been one of my favourite subjects

Anarchism: 2017: Margaret Killjoy: The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion, TOR
  • Excellent and short novel about a drifter who visits a town in Idaho in search of answers about her best friend’s death.
  • Members of the town had previously summoned a demon, a red three antlered deer, that violently kills anyone who seeks power over others, thereby maintaining the anarchist order.

Antifa: 2017: Mark Bray: Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, Melville House
  • An excellent overview of 20th century anti-fascism and current/recent events in North America and Europe
  • Also provides a set of arguments in favour of contemporary Antifa contingents, and of their tactics.

Black Metal: Book: 2014: Scott Wilson (ed): Melancology: Black Metal Theory and Ecology, Zero Books

Black Metal: 2016: Jorn “Necrobutcher” Stubberud: The Death Archives: Mayhem 1984-94, Ecstatic Peace Library
  • Excellent memoir of the earlier years of the Black Metal band Mayhem. From their inception to the time of Euronymous’ murder.
  • The book is primarily photographs accompanied by text of stories related to those photos.
  • Stubberud’s memoirs of Mayhem’s late singer, Dead, are the book’s most interesting parts. Dead is responsible for much of the look and ideas of Black Metal. Stubberud credits Dead with having written most of the lyrics for their classic album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, and describes Dead as making connections with death that exceed the theatrical.
